Shame is a 2011 drama film directed by Steve McQueen that chronicles the life of sex addict Brandon Sullivan – played by Michael Fassbender. Set in New York City, Brandon is a businessman dealing with the harmful consequences of his addiction. This addiction severely hampers his ability to cultivate real emotional relationships. When his troubled sister, Sissy comes for an unexpected visit, his world comes crashing down. Sissy is played by Carey Mulligan.
The Story of Brandon
Brandon is a well-established businessman who ‘appears to have it all’. He enjoys all the materialistic perks his job offers, such as a stylish apartment and confidence among peers. Although it seems as if he is living a productive life on the outside, he struggles with a deep sense of emptiness on the inside. Brandon’s sex addiction stems from an inability cope with his overwhelming sense of loneliness. He spends most of his free time watching pornography, hiring prostitutes, and engaging in casual encounters, while restricting any emotional attachments.
Well, things take a dramatic turn when his younger sister, Sissy, shows up unannounced at her brother’s place. Sissy is a talented but emotionally troubled singer struggling to control her life. Different from Brandon, Sissy desires emotional bonding which is often troubling for him. Their relationship is closely complex intertwined with trauma and pain neither of them fully recognize or deal with.
A Life in Disaster
The introduction of Sissy in Brandon’s life make him uncomfortable. He was more comfortable avoiding emotions, until now. Attempting to foster a healthier relationship with a work colleague, Marianne, proves difficult for him. They go on a date. He was under the impression that must be getting to know one another better. To his surprise, he’s terrified of real intimacy. And when he tries to have intercourse with the woman, he’d later realize to get into a meaningless encounter with, he’s unable to perform. This separation indicates that his addiction isn’t about pleasure but about shunning authentic emotional relationships.
Brandon’s life continues to get worse as the film progresses, and now he’s even confronted with engaging in forbidden activity on work premises. Which subsequently gets him in trouble at the job. While Sissy’s problems are only getting worse. This eventually leads her to develop a fleeting affair with Brandon’s boss which deepen the cracks of their already strained relationship.
In an attempt to indulge deeper into his addiction, Brandon is looking for more extreme experiences to help him numb. Sieve is now frequenting nightclubs, gay bars and engaging in egregious activities to receive some kind of relief yet still, it feels as though he is just as broken with no escape.
A Sad Change
Brandon comes home to Sissy’s hanged body and that moment is where the film hits the saddest point. Sissy has always been vocal but Brandon chooses to be oblivious to the pain she is going through. This event puts a reality check on both individuals that ultimately makes them face their struggles.
While Brandon cradles his sister, the true weight of the circumstance dawns on him. The final scenes tell a different tale, he is wandering the city of New York feign and trying to figure out what he is supposed to do next. Instead, he spots the woman from the previous subway scene. The one who he flirtatiously gazed with. At the end, it is unclear whether he changes or rejoins his previous patterns. His behavior causes everyone around him to be uncertain. The movie comes to its conclusion without truly providing an answer to whether he transformed or not.
Themes and Meaning
Shame takes a deep dive into the themes of addiction, isolation, and the challenges of human interdependence. The film does not critique Brandon’s behavior but rather depicts the extent of abuse addiction can cause to one’s life. His challenge is not solely sex; it is an attempt to satisfy an emotional emptiness.
Another pivotal theme is the relationship between Brandon and Sissy. They both are scarred from their past but cope with those memories differently. While Sissy attempts to reach out for love and intimacy, Brandon isolates himself. Although the film never explains the trauma, it does imply that their struggles stem from some unresolved issues.
Performances and Direction
Michael Fassbender portrays Brandon in the film and his performance is nothing short of admirable. He captures the character’s conflicted self with such delicate precision that it becomes evident that the frenzy of the character is born out of pain, not pleasure. Carey Mulligan also has a strong performance as Sissy and her version of “New York, New York” is particularly stirring.
The intensity of the cinematography is primarily attributed to Steve McQueen’s direction. While Brandon remains in an emotionally hollow state, the camera work stays equally frosty and remote. Detailed, silent sequences capture and hold the camera on his face while he undergoes wordless struggles. The music is very quiet and restrained, giving an impression of solitude.
Think of a Film That You Will Always Remember
Shame is an incredibly hard movie to bear. Not just because of the feeling, but both because of the things that the movie portrays and how it conveys them. Without delving into the specifics, all Appendage delivers is discomforting truths. With no easy solutions or happy endings, viewers are left with a character whose own neurosis holds him captive.
Brandon’s character brings forth even more concerns. No one ends up a better person till the end. Numerous questions arise from this piece in particular. Does he ever manage to alter his ways? Garners he possesses the ability to love? In When does Shame itself become a player? These make Shame an extraordinary adventure to undertake.
Despite being focused on the emotional battles of a unique individual, the themes transcend all nationalities. People mask suffering using various types of addiction such as work, sex and even alcohol. It acts as a powerful reminder to the audience that no matter how addictive we try to become, painful feelings will always seek and find us.
