A Chaotic Journey into the Anarchic World of Pandora
More than three months after its scheduled release, Borderlands make their way to the theatres, exhibiting the chaotic and dystopian world of Pandora, for its viewers. Eli Roth is set to direct the film and like the ever popular video game franchise that this film is based on, the film has a growing star cast that includes the likes of Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis among others. But does it catch the magic of the franchise or completely botch it?
A Journey Through Pandora: Plot Overview
At the center of the story, Borderlands, we have a mega criminal, Lilith which is played by Cate. She’s forced to leave her volatile home planet, Pandora, which is at the edges of the chaotic galaxy. As one of Lilith’s tasks, she must rescue the abducted daughter of Edgar Ramirez, who is a powerful Tycoon owning inter galactic businesses and buildings.
To aid her in mission, Lilith gathers an array of unconventional individuals which includes: Roland, a mercenary played by Kevin Hart, Tiny Tina who is a demolition expert, Krieg, who is the unhinged, muscular bodyguard of Tiny, Dr. Patricia, the not so stable head scientist, and Claptrap voiced by Jack Black, an overly enthusiastic robot.
The film Borderlands is set in a fictional universe, where an odd group of characters set out to explore Pandora, a planet plagued with unrelenting hunter, hostile alien beasts and aggressive corporate institutions. As the group journeys through the planet, they discover mysteries and revelations that may not only change the fate of the galaxy, but their own as well.
From Game Console to big Screen: Production and Challenges
The most recent installment in the Borderlands franchise was always going to face issues in bringing the film adaptation to life. Lionsgate first announced the film in 2015, but production only began in 2021 after an extensive round of development. The movie was filmed in various U.S. studios and in Hungary, with remarkable effort being put towards capturing the essence of how Pandora looks.
Using a combination of practical and digital effects, fans will appreciate how the film adapted the signature cel-shaded artistic style Blockbuster Games are known for. Unfortunately, despite having production costs fo $115 million, the movie only made $30.9 million through box offices, proving to be a disappointing return for an eagerly awaited adaptation of the game.
Critical Fallout: Action, Comedy & the Things Left Unsaid
The movie was described as ‘an action film without an action or a comedy sketch’ and therefore struggled to keep up with the dramatic narrative with the gap in irreverent humor which defines the game. Critics and fans of the movie were underwhelmed as the aim of Borderlands was to channel the anarchic energy of its source material, and utterly failed to do so.
For what seems like the first time, the characters are devoid of all charm as the cast fumbles to bring them to life. From what the review on Rotten Tomatoes indicate, the credibility of the film comes below the astonishingly low expectations it set. For all the fans of Borderlands, the elites showed disjointed chemistry with each other. What they did get was Cate Blanchett who was an astonishing anchor as Lilith and the rest of the elites disappointing their fans who cherished the game.
Themes and Analysis: The Borderlands Spirit
In the context of these claims, the movie Borderlands deals with the themes of found family, unchecked greed, and most importantly, redemption. One major theme depicted in the movie is Lilith’s reluctance to trust her team which goes on to illustrate her easy alliance with the rest of her team. Moreover, the film does tackle the capitalist exploitation of depicting the fictional dystopian world of Pandora as a mirror of the real world’s inequalities.
Nonetheless, there are noticeable gaps in the action: the comical caricatures, which have long been a trademark of the franchise, are too often misplaced, and the anticipated thrill of the action scenes is absent. Still, the movie has its moments, as a few scenes beautifully capture the chaotic nature of the Borderlands universe.
Tablet’s Final Thoughts: A Flurred Attempt to Engage with Pandora
While the bane of the rest of the viewers across the globe is capturing the core and essence of sensitive material, Borderlands (2024) sought to overcome this by developing a breathtaking depiction of Napoleon. It succeeds in bits and pieces – the undertone is too erratic and the story is not properly integrated, which is borderline unforgivable. It is a splendid treat for long- term gamers, but utterly unforgiving for the newcomers, who will find themselves lost to the storm.
When the figurative dust settles, Borderlands will be a daring experiment gone wrong: a tribute to how difficult it is to translate games to the grandeur of Hollywood.
