Bang Gang: A Modern Love Story is a film from Franco about romance directed by Eva Husson in the year 2015. In a town, a group of teenagers is shown navigating through the newfound independence where they form relationships, and make choices that have tremendous consequences. The film seeks to highlight relationships more than love as it pivots towards character development and decision making that eventually impacts the future of people, especially the youth.
The Story
The movie revolves around George. She is a high school student who tends to be more active, sociable, confident, and willing to try new things. There is this popular boy called Alex attended by everyone in school, which George has a crush on. She tries to go out of her way in the hopes of Alex liking her and in turn, makes a lot of bad decisions that are bold in hopes Alex makes an attempt at noticing her liking for him. To her sorrow, it does not go to her benefit, and instead gets herself into a lot of trouble none of which she expected.
Middle of the film shows George’s best friend Laetitia being in her own troubled mind. She witnesses her best friend George making reckless and foolish gambits that are inappropriate to say the least. George’s choice to engage in thrilling yet dangerous acts has made Laetitia question her self worth in the friendship. Another student that is portrayed is Gabriel. Unlike most students he seems to be more quiet and introspective. There is hint for him having certain types of feelings for George, but his expressiveness towards them is not clear.
It’s clear that the celebration descends into chaos as night parties spiral out of control, each seeming far removed from the last. The more the teenagers drink and dance without a care, the more intricate the web of petty grievances grows. Each teens’ relationship becomes interspersed with vague sentiments of being hurt, mended, spurned, and betrayed. While some feel regret, others are lost in confusion while some simply promise to try and find their own answers. The most complex realization they arrive at is that their emotions and bonds to each of them stems from their own individual actionable choices.
Themes of the Film
The complexity of the film showcases themes which most young adults would self-identify with, determined by their own unique personal experiences:
Friendship and Loyalty – George and Laetitia share a bond which to them is very dear. They’re very close but when repurposed Franco gets in the way, George becomes distant over time. The film depicts the most relatable struggle: how friendships build or shatter due to the choices we make.
Love and Emotions – The characters grapple with first love, first crushes, emotional romances, and constantly question their overall grasp of love. One thing is made clear — young people are left with muddled emotions which can prove to be puzzling throughout.
Peer Pressure and Choices – The teens throughout the film oftentimes chase trends. The authority neglected these children as it is made clear that decisions have multiple levels of consequences, the greatest being \emph{social hierarchy}.
The Impact of Reputation – The characters hear about reputation and how one’s actions impact how people perceive them. Friendship and self esteem can be altered with just some gossip.
Why the Film is Important
The film relates to youth, but as with all coming of age films, Bang Gang: A Modern Love Story’s purpose is to convey a message to everyone. From the first shot, the audience is drawn in the characters’ emotions, enhanced by great cinematography. This, combined with the music, sets a dreamlike yet realistic tone and makes the movie more enjoyable.
