Aliens: Romulus

The Alien franchise, which has established itself as one of the major pillars of science fiction horror, is coming back with Alien: Romulus. The film will be out on August 16, 2024 thanks to Fede Alvarez’s directing. This also marks Alvarez’s return after the successful Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead series. Literally, Alien: Romulus acts as a narrative “”middle child” during the incredible saga as it fills in the narrative gaps between Ridley Scott’s original Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens.

Synopsis: Shadows on Romulus

The film begins in the year 2142 and follows a group of young settlers who attempt to escape from the overpowering dominance of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Hoping to seek fortune and solace in Romulus, the engineered spaceship, they are forced to discover its terrifying secret.

Romulus doesn’t function as a base. Whether colonists want to acknowledge it or not, the spaceship is their tomb. Unforuntaely there’s no escaping reality where the Xenomorph awaits. As a deadly creature begins hunting that ends acerone by one, survivors are forced to traverse through the cramped corridors of the space station. Not only do they have to deal with the terrifying alien but also their doubts and fears.

Production: To Practical Horror, Their Is A Welcome Back

Principal photography commenced in March 2023 at the Origo Studios in Budapest, Hungary. Alvarez’s philosophy on realism is admirable as he fights against the overuse of CGI in movies and utilizes practical special effects extensively to increase the suspense and the feelings of confinement that terrified viewers in the earlier films.

While initially the film was planned to be available through Hulu only, it was later decided that the film will have its premiere debut after the positive feedback obtained in the test screenings. Now, fans of the franchise will be able to enjoy the terrified masterpiece on the big screen where it was meant to be.

Critical Reception: Mixed. Some are Satisfied While Others are Not

Early reviews regarding the film focus on the portrayal of an effective mixture of nostalgia and innovation. On Rotten Tomatoes, Alien: Romulus received a 75% approval rating mainly due to the positive reviews about the tense atmosphere and thematic depth. Critics, including The Times, have praised how Alvarez managed to inject new life into the franchise by skillfully merging the Xenomorph lifecycle with the standard horror themes.

But not everything about the feedback has been positive. The Atlantic panned the film for being too reliant on the callbacks and branded it as “a nostalgia compilation rather than a bold new vision.” Still, audiences and critics from different corners of the world agree the film has achieved success with the scares and the atmospheric setup of the film and do make it worthy of being a part of the Alien franchise.

Themes and Analysis: Fear, Corporatism, and Identity

While Alien: Romulus is embedded in horror, there are themes of subjugation, exploitation, and a loss of innocence that can be explored in the film. The confrontation of the colonists bears a close resemblance to the relationship they have with the unfaced Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which serves as a metaphorical representation of the dehumanizing grip of modern corporatism.

They also had to deal with suppressed fears and primal instincts which were also triggered when the chilling symbol of the Xenomorph was introduced along with Andy the synthetic stepbrother which added a layer of complexity. Andy’s internal conflict brings forth identity, trust, and the blend between artificiality and humanity.

Conclusion: A Renewal That Should Be Followed

Reviving the horror of the franchise for a new audience while simultaneously respecting its history is what sets Alien: Romulus apart. It immerses both devoted fans and newcomers into the franchise by beautifully catering fresh perspectives while staying true to classic horror. Its combination of themes centered around deep existential dread, stimulating ideas, and a collection of able actors make Romulus to be a key piece of the Alien saga – a narrative that never loses its theme despite the changes it goes through.
